Genau diese Mischung hat dem Franchise auf der Konsole einst Kultstatus verschafft. Videospielverfilmungen hatten indes lange einen schweren Stand. Zu oft fühlten sie sich an wie austauschbare Actionfilme, denen lediglich bekannte Namen übergestülpt wurden. In den letzten Jahren hat sich das Bild jedoch spürbar gewandelt. Serien wie „The Last Of Us“ oder „Fallout“ haben gezeigt, dass es möglich ist, Spielwelten ernst zu nehmen, ohne ihren Unterhaltungswert zu verlieren.

Auch im Kino funktioniert das Konzept wieder, wie der enorme Erfolg von „Der Super Mario Bros. Film“ oder „Ein Minecraft Film“ beweist. Vor diesem Hintergrund wirkt es fast logisch, dass auch „Street Fighter“ einen neuen Anlauf wagt. Dabei ist es nicht der erste Besuch der Reihe auf der Leinwand. Die Version von 1994 mit Jean-Claude Van Damme ging als schriller Actionfilm durch, hatte mit den Spielen aber nur am Rande zu tun.

„Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li“ aus dem Jahr 2009 konnte ebenfalls kaum überzeugen. Eine gewisse Annäherung an die Vorlage gelang später der Mini-Serie „Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist“, doch erst jetzt scheint das Gesamtpaket aus Stil, Figuren und Tonfall zusammenzufinden. Der neue Film entsteht bei Legendary in Zusammenarbeit mit Capcom, dem japanischen Entwickler hinter der Marke.

Legendary sicherte sich 2023 die Film- und Fernsehrechte an dem Franchise, das seit 1987 existiert und weltweit über 49 Millionen verkaufte Einheiten vorweisen kann. Kaum eine Prügelspielreihe hat so viele ikonische Charaktere hervorgebracht. Entsprechend hoch ist der Wiedererkennungswert. Also eine Steilvorlage für eine Leinwandadaption, die sich traut, genau das auszuspielen.

Inszeniert wird „Street Fighter“ von Kitao Sakurai, der zuvor mit der Komödie „Bad Trip“ auffiel und auch an der Actionserie „Twisted Metal“ beteiligt war. Letztere basiert ebenfalls auf einer Videospielmarke und setzt stark auf überzeichnete Gewalt und schwarzen Humor. Diese Erfahrung scheint sich nun auszuzahlen. Auch die Besetzung fällt ungewöhnlich vielfältig aus.

Zum Cast gehören unter anderem Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Callina Liang, Jason Momoa, Eric André, David Dastmalchian, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Orville Peck, Kyle Mooney, Andrew Schulz und 50 Cent. Die Geschichte ist im Jahr 1993 angesiedelt. Ryu und Ken, einst unzertrennliche Kämpfer, sind entfremdet, als Chun-Li sie für das nächste World Warrior Tournament rekrutiert. Das Turnier ist mehr als ein Kräftemessen!

Hinter den Kämpfen verbirgt sich eine größere Verschwörung, die alte Wunden aufreißt und die Figuren zwingt, sich ihren eigenen Dämonen zu stellen. Der Kinostart von „Street Fighter“ ist für den 15. Oktober 2026 angesetzt.
