Rian Johnson, bekannt für seine innovativen Streifen wie „Brick“ und „Looper“, sowie seine gefeierte Regiearbeit in der legendären „Breaking Bad“-Episode „Ozymandias“, kehrt wieder zu seiner erfolgreichen Krimi-Blockbuster-Reihe zurück. Denn nach dem gemischten Erfolg von „Die letzten Jedi“ aus der „Star Wars“-Reihe, fand Johnson mit „Knives Out“ zurück auf die Erfolgsspur. Nun steht der dritte Teil an und dürfte abermals recht erfolgreich werden.

Denn „Knives Out“, der an Werke von Agatha Christie erinnert, wurde schnell zum Publikumsliebling und ließ Johnsons vorherige Kritiker versöhnlicher stimmen. Mit einem Einspielergebnis von über 300 Millionen US-Dollar avancierte „Knives Out“ überraschend zum erfolgreichsten Originalfilm des Jahres 2019, ohne auf bestehende Franchises oder Vorlagen zurückzugreifen.

Der Film sicherte sich eine Oscar-Nominierung für das beste Originaldrehbuch und begründete ein neues Franchise. Diese Erfolgsgeschichte setzte sich mit dem zweiten Teil, „Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery“, fort. Dieser wurde 2022 von Netflix herausgebracht, nachdem der Streaming-Anbieter zwei Sequels für 469 Millionen US-Dollar erworben hatte. Auch „Glass Onion“ stieß auf ähnlich positive Resonanz wie sein Vorgänger und zählt zu den meistgestreamten Filmen auf Netflix.

Nun steht das Franchise also vor seinem nächsten Kapitel. Denn nun kündigten Johnson und Netflix in einem Teaser den Titel des dritten Teils der Reihe an: „Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery“. Zudem wurde auch der Kinostartzeitraum bekannt gegeben. Demnach soll „Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery“ 2025 in die Kinos kommen. Was den Itel betrifft, so dürfte Johnson abermals wenig erfreut darüber sein. Denn bereits die Titelgebung des vorherigen Films fand bei dem Regisseur wenig Anklang.

Doch so wie es ausschaut muss er sich weiterhin den kommerziellen Kompromissen beugen, die mit einer großen finanziellen Unterstützung durch Netflix einhergehen. Wie dem auch sei, die bevorstehenden Dreharbeiten zu „Wake Up Dead Man“ sind angekündigt, doch Details zur Besetzung neben Daniel Craig bleiben vorerst unter Verschluss. Blicken wir indes noch mal zurück, wie alles im Originalfilm „Knives Out“ begann. Nämlich mit: Harlan Thrombey ist tot!

Der renommierte Krimiautor und Familienpatriarch wurde auf der Feier zu seinem 85. Geburtstag tot aufgefunden. War es tatsächlich Selbstmord, oder hat ihn gar jemand aus seinem engen Kreis um die Ecke gebracht. Der lässig-elegante Kommissar beginnt seine Ermittlungen und während sich sämtliche anwesenden Gäste alles andere als kooperativ zeigen, spitzt sich die Lage zu und das Misstrauen untereinander wächst. Ein komplexes Netz aus Lügen, falschen Fährten und Ablenkungsmanövern muss durchkämmt werden, um die Wahrheit hinter Thrombeys vorzeitigem Tod zu enthüllen.
