Bekannt wurde dies über den offiziellen Instagram-Account der Serie, der von Paramount+ verwaltet wird. Neben Patrick Gibson wird auch Hollywood-Urgestein Christian Slater („Robin Hood“, „True Romance“) zum Cast gehören, der in die Rolle von Dexters Vater Harry Morgan schlüpfen wird. Außerdem mit dabei ist Molly Brown, die zuvor in „Senior Year“ zu sehen war. Sie wurde als Dexters jüngere Schwester Debra Morgan gecastet.

Das Drehbuch und die Gesamtleitung von „Dexter: Original Sin“ übernimmt indes Clyde Phillips, der auch bei der Hauptserie als Drehbuchautor, ausführender Produzent und Showrunner tätig war. „Dexter: Original Sin“ wird zunächst zehn Episoden umfassen, die tiefere Einblicke in Dexters Entwicklung zu dem Mann geben sollen, der später seine dunklen Triebe hinter einer Fassade als forensischer Blutspurenanalyst verbirgt.

Das Prequel „Dexter: Original Sin“ spielt in Miami des Jahres 1991, ungefähr 15 Jahre vor den Geschehnissen der Hauptserie. Hier kämpft Dexter vermehrt mit seinen dunklen Trieben. Unterstützung findet er bei Harry, der ihm hilft, diese Impulse zu kontrollieren und sie gegen Personen zu richten, die seiner Meinung nach den Tod „verdienen“.
