Hintergrund dieser Mutmaßung ist ein geleakter Screenshot, der kurzzeitig in einem offiziellen Blog-Beitrag des Unternehmens unter dem Titel „Xbox öffnet eine Milliarde Türen“ aufgetaucht war. Zu sehen war auf diesem eine innovative Benutzeroberfläche, die neben Xbox-Spielen auch Titel der eigentlich PC-exklusiven Plattform Steam auflistete.

Der Screenshot ist inzwischen zwar verschwunden, bot jedoch bereits einen vielsagenden Einblick in die künftige strategische Ausrichtung von Microsoft. So wurde die neue Oberfläche auf einer Vielzahl von Geräten von Fernsehern bis hin zu Handhelds dargestellt und offenbarte eine separate Steam-Kategorie, die neben anderen bekannten Rubriken wie „Installiert“, „Im Besitz“ und „Game Pass“ aufgeführt war.

Das deckt sich mit Insider-Berichten, denen zufolge Microsoft an einem Update der Xbox-App arbeitet, welches die Anzeige aller auf dem PC installierten Spiele ermöglichen soll, unabhängig davon, ob diese aus Steam, dem Epic Games Store oder anderen Plattformen stammen.

Wie es heißt, befindet sich die Integration von Steam allerdings noch in einer frühen Entwicklungsphase. Zu den großen Herausforderungen, die ein solches Vorhaben mit sich bringt, gehören vor allem die umfassende Systemkompatibilität und rechtliche Fragen im Zusammenhang mit den Spielebibliotheken.

Phil Spencer, der Leiter der Xbox-Sparte, hatte zuvor bereits angedeutet, dass man PC-Stores wie den Epic Games Store oder Itch.io in Zukunft auf Xbox-Konsolen integrieren könnte. Ein solcher Schritt würde gut in das Konzept von Microsoft passen, das Medium Gaming in all seiner Vielfalt unter einem Dach zugänglich zu machen.

Leo Olebe, Vice President of Global Partnerships bei Xbox, fasste diese Vision mit den Worten zusammen: „Wir glauben, dass Gamer die Spiele spielen sollten, die sie möchten, mit den Menschen, die sie möchten, wo immer sie möchten.“
