Ursprünglich war die Idee einer Fortsetzung bereits in der Originalkomödie von 1987 angedeutet, in der die Figur Yogurt scherzte: „Wenn Gott es so will, sehen wir uns in ‚Spaceballs 2‘ wieder: ‚Auf der Suche nach noch mehr Geld‘“. Obwohl diese Aussage damals nicht ernst gemeint war, hat der Gedanke an eine Fortsetzung über die Jahre hinweg Fans amüsiert.

Im Jahr 2017 schien die Zeit für eine Fortsetzung günstig, als „Spaceballs“-Regisseur Mel Brooks angesichts der neuen „Star Wars“-Filme seine Hoffnung auf eine Fortsetzung äußerte. Doch erst kürzlich wurden konkrete Anzeichen einer möglichen Fortsetzung sichtbar, als Josh Gad, bekannt für seine Rollen in den „Eiskönigin“-Filmen und als LeFou in der „Die Schöne und das Biest“-Realverfilmung, Hinweise auf ein mögliches Drehbuch gab.

Auf Instagram teilte Gad die erste Seite eines Drehbuchs, das viele Geheimnisse verbarg, aber genug Informationen durchscheinen ließ, um Spekulationen anzuheizen. Der Name Mel, gefolgt von einem geschwärzten Nachnamen, sowie der Handlungsort „Star Field“ weisen deutlich auf eine Verbindung zu „Spaceballs“ hin. Gad äußerte sich begeistert über das Projekt:

Die Mitwirkung von Mel Brooks, der im ersten Teil sowohl Regie führte als auch mitspielte, ist ungewiss. Angesichts seines hohen Alters und der Tatsache, dass er seit den 90er Jahren keine Filme mehr inszeniert hat, erscheint eine Regiearbeit unwahrscheinlich. Dennoch könnte ein Cameo-Auftritt von Brooks in der Fortsetzung stattfinden, insbesondere da er 2023 in der Serie „Only Murders In The Building“ auftrat.

Details über die Handlung von „Spaceballs 2“ oder einen möglichen Veröffentlichungstermin sind logischerweise bisher nicht bekannt. Der Umstand, dass bereits ein Drehbuch existiert und möglicherweise sogar Regisseure für das Projekt gefunden wurden, wie Gads geheimnisvoller Beitrag andeutet, lässt jedoch auf eine konkret fortschreitende Entwicklung schließen.

Während die Originalbesetzung um Bill Pullman als Lone Starr und weitere Schlüsselfiguren des ersten Films beliebt bei den Fans bleibt, ist es noch unklar, ob „Spaceballs 2“ auf bekannte Charaktere zurückgreifen oder neue Wege gehen wird. Sicher ist jedoch, dass die bloße Aussicht auf eine Fortsetzung der legendären Sci-Fi-Parodie für reichlich Vorfreude bei allen Fans sorgt.
