Im Mittelpunkt von "I Play Rocky" steht die wahre Geschichte des damals noch unbekannten Schauspielers und Autors Sylvester Stallone. Ende der 1970er Jahre schrieb er das Drehbuch zu "Rocky" und verkaufte es nur unter der Bedingung, selbst die Hauptrolle zu übernehmen. Der Film wurde zu einem weltweiten Erfolg und begründete eine der bedeutendsten Sportfilmreihen der Kinogeschichte.

Regisseur Peter Farrelly, bekannt durch "Green Book" und zahlreiche Komödien, inszeniert das Biopic als Hommage an Durchhaltevermögen und Selbstvertrauen. Auf Instagram kündigten die Produzenten an, dass die Dreharbeiten bereits laufen. "Der Film erzählt die wahre Geschichte von Sylvester Stallone und seinem unerschütterlichen Glauben, dass es ihm nicht nur bestimmt war, Rocky zu schreiben, sondern ihn auch zu verkörpern", heißt es in dem Beitrag.

Das nun veröffentlichte erste Bild zeigt Anthony Ippolito in der Rolle des jungen Stallone und die Ähnlichkeit ist erstaunlich. Schon in Setaufnahmen der vergangenen Woche war er kaum vom Original zu unterscheiden. Ippolito spielte zuvor in der Serie "The Offer" einen jungen Al Pacino, was seinen Hang zu italo-amerikanischen Filmlegenden unterstreicht.
