Netflix zum Beispiel produziert jedes Jahr Hunderte von Serien und Filmen, wobei natürlich nicht jede Produktion auf Dauer finanziert werden kann. Disney selbst ist hierbei ebenfalls keine Ausnahme in dieser Hinsicht. So mussten auch bereits andere große Projekte wie die Fantasy-Serie „Willow“ und die „Star Wars“-Serie „The Acolyte“ jeweils nach nur einer Staffel eingestellt werden.

Diese Praxis hatte bereits das Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) erreicht, wobei Gerüchte besagen, dass „She-Hulk: Die Anwältin“ ebenfalls nicht fortgesetzt wird. Die Hauptdarstellerin Tatiana Maslany äußerte sich bereits skeptisch über die Zukunft der Serie, was darauf hindeutet, dass die Kosten im Vergleich zum erzielten Erfolg möglicherweise zu hoch waren.

Mit „Marvel Moon Girl und Devil Dinosaur“ hat man nun auch bei den Animations-Serien ein Opfer gefunden. Diese Serie genoss dabei eine herausragende Bewertung auf Plattformen wie Rotten Tomatoes, wo sie bei Kritikern eine perfekte Quote von 100 Prozent erzielte und auch vom Publikum mit 93 Prozent überaus positiv bewertet wurde.

Die Geschichte von „Marvel Moon Girl und Devil Dinosaur“ folgt der 13-jährigen Lunella Lafayette aus New York City, die durch ein zufällig aktiviertes Portal den Dinosaurier Devil in ihre Welt holt und mit ihm zusammen spannende Abenteuer erlebt. Trotz der hervorragenden Kritiken und der Begeisterung der Fans hat Disney nun die Serie nach nur zwei Staffeln eingestellt.

Bereits im September 2024 ließ Produzent Steve Loter über Instagram andeuten, dass die Serie nicht fortgesetzt wird, was durch einen kryptischen Beitrag mit dem Hashtag #WoistdasOrchester angedeutet wurde. Inzwischen bestätigte DisneyToon auf X, dass die Serie nicht weitergeführt wird, was zu zahlreichen Reaktionen von Mitarbeitern und Fans führte.

Einige Disney-Mitarbeiter äußerten sich dazu, dass die Einstellung der Serie bereits seit Langem bekannt war, jedoch nicht öffentlich kommuniziert werden durfte. Die Produktionsstätte für „Moon Girl“ sei schon seit einem Jahr wie eine Geisterstadt gewesen. Trotz des Endes der Serie drückte ein ehemaliger Storyboard-Künstler, für den „Moon Girl und Devil Dinosaur“ sein erster Job war, seine Dankbarkeit aus:

„Diese Serie wird auf immer einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen haben. Danke, dass ihr mir eine Chance gegeben habt und ich hoffe, dass alle die letzten Folgen genießen werden! Es war eine Ehre, Moon Girl.“ Während die finale Staffel noch ausgestrahlt wird und das endgültige Ende der Serie bevorsteht, bleibt den Fans immerhin die Möglichkeit, die bereits veröffentlichten Episoden auf Disney+ zu streamen und so die außergewöhnlichen Abenteuer von Lunella und ihrem Dinosaurier-Freund mitzuerleben.
