Mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte sind vergangen, seit „Buffy – Im Bann der Dämonen“ mit ihrer letzten Folge eine Ära beendete. Nun steht das nächste Kapitel der ikonischen Vampirserie in den Startlöchern. Dies mit frischem Blut, prominenter Regie und einer neuen Generation von Dämonenjägern. Der Mythos um die Auserwählte lebt also weiter, aber dieses Mal ist die legendäre Buffy Summers nicht mehr allein auf der Jagd.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, die das Gesicht einer ganzen TV-Generation prägte, kehrt dabei zurück, jedoch nicht mehr als jugendliche Einzelkämpferin, sondern als Mentorin. In der kommenden Reboot-Serie, die von Hulu produziert und zunächst mit einem Pilotprojekt getestet wird, übernimmt Gellar erneut die Rolle, mit der sie Fernsehgeschichte schrieb. Ihre neue Aufgabe ist es, eine junge Vampirkillerin auszubilden und den Staffelstab symbolisch weiterzureichen.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong, die neue Vampirkillerin

Dieses neue Gesicht im „Buffy“-Universum ist niemand Geringeres als Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Serienfans kennen die 15-Jährige bereits aus „Star Wars: Skeleton Crew“ auf Disney+, wo sie sich in einer abenteuerlichen Coming-of-Age-Welt behauptet. Nun wagt sie den Sprung in ein ganz anderes Genre und das mit großem emotionalen Impact.

Ein von Sarah Michelle Gellar persönlich überbrachtes Casting-Video auf Instagram dokumentiert Armstrongs Reaktion: Freudentränen, als sie erfährt, dass sie die neue Vampirkillerin sein wird. Die Figur, die Armstrong verkörpert, wird als eher zurückhaltende Highschool-Schülerin beschrieben. Eine klassische Ausgangslage für die Transformation zur Auserwählten. Was genau im Piloten passiert, bleibt vorerst aber unter Verschluss.

Klar ist aber, dass sich Fans auf eine Mischung aus Nostalgie und zeitgemäßer Erzählweise einstellen können. Besonders spannend wird ein Blick hinter die Kulissen. Mit Chloé Zhao übernimmt eine Oscar-prämierte Filmemacherin die Regie. Zhao, die mit „Nomadland“ Filmgeschichte schrieb und später mit „Eternals“ ins Marvel-Universum einstieg, ist zudem bekennender „Buffy“-Fan.

Sie bringt nun ihre ganz eigene Handschrift in die neue Serie ein. Die Drehbücher stammen indes von Nora und Lilla Zuckerman. Einem eingespielten Autorenduo, das sich durch Serien wie „Suits“ und „Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.“ einen Namen gemacht hat. Auch die Produzentenseite ist prominent besetzt. Neben Sarah Michelle Gellar, die als Executive Producerin gleich doppelt mitwirkt, kehren weitere bekannte Namen aus dem ursprünglichen Produktionsumfeld zurück.

Gerüchte über mögliche Gastauftritte

Fran Rubel Kuzui und Kaz Kuzui, die bereits beim Originalfilm „Buffy – Der Vampirkiller“ beteiligt waren, sind wieder an Bord – ebenso wie TV-Produzentin Gail Berman. Für einen besonderen Aha-Moment sorgt zudem die Beteiligung von Dolly Parton. Die Country-Ikone war schon damals, wenn auch vielen verborgen, als Produzentin involviert.

Gerüchte über mögliche Gastauftritte früherer Stars halten sich indes hartnäckig, auch wenn bisher keine konkreten Namen bestätigt wurden. Da viele ehemalige Darsteller noch immer eine enge Bindung zur Serie pflegen, gilt es als realistisch, dass vertraute Figuren in neuer Funktion auftauchen könnten – sei es als Mentoren, Wegbegleiter oder Widersacher.
