Was mit einer Manga-Adaption begann, hat sich inzwischen zu einem internationalen Serien-Hit entwickelt. Die Rede ist natürlich von der japanischen Sci-Fi-Thrillerserie „Alice in Borderland“ auf Netflix. Und nach langem Zittern, bekommt die Serie bekanntlich doch noch eine dritte Staffel. Und das, obwohl die Geschichte laut Manga-Vorlage eigentlich bereits auserzählt war.

In diesem Jahr geht es aber dennoch weiter mit der dritten Staffel, zu der nun auch endlich ein erster Teaser-Trailer erschienen ist. Arisu und Usagi werden also doch nicht zum letzten Mal durch tödliche Spiele irren. Das zeigt auch der Teaser-Trailer, der einen Ausblick auf das gibt, was noch kommen soll. Mit ihrem Start 2020 schaffte „Alice in Borderland“ einen schnellen Aufstieg auf der weltweiten Beliebtheitsskala der Netflix-Produktionen.

Dunkle Ästhetik, nervenaufreibende Action und eine Story, die mehr Fragen aufwarf als beantwortete, machten die Serie für viele zum Pflichtprogramm. Basierend auf Haro Asōs gleichnamigem Manga, verfolgt die Serie das Schicksal von Arisu, einem jungen Mann, der sich plötzlich in einer fast menschenleeren Variante Tokios wiederfindet – ein Ort, an dem jedes Spiel Leben kostet. Unterstützt von der Überlebenskünstlerin Usagi begibt er sich auf eine Odyssee durch brutale Prüfungen und finstere Mysterien.

Nach zwei Staffeln schien das Kapitel geschlossen. Arisu und Usagi hatten alle Karten gesammelt, die Strippenzieher entlarvt – der Ausgangspunkt des Mangas war komplett abgearbeitet. Doch wie es scheint, war das Spiel nie wirklich vorbei. Die Geschichte geht weiter, wenn auch auf bislang unbekannten Pfaden. Denn der Trailer deutet an, dass die Rückkehr in die reale Welt für Arisu und Usagi keine Erlösung war.

Keine Erlösung für Arisu und Usagi

Zwar leben sie inzwischen ein scheinbar ruhiges Leben – sogar verheiratet, Erinnerungen an Borderland ausgelöscht – doch die Vergangenheit kratzt an der Oberfläche. Träume, Visionen und unerklärliche Déjà-vus lassen die alte Welt wieder aufblitzen. Besonders spannend wird es, als Usagi dem rätselhaften Forscher Ryuji (Kento Kaku) folgt und plötzlich spurlos verschwindet.

Parallel dazu tritt Banda (Hayato Isomura) auf den Plan und überreicht Arisu eine letzte Karte: den Joker. Die Karte, die in der Vorlage stets mysteriös blieb, scheint nun das Tor zu einem neuen Level zu öffnen. Mit diesem kleinen Stück Papier kippt die Realität erneut – und ein neuer Zyklus beginnt. Natürlich kehren auch Kento Yamazaki und Tao Tsuchiya als Arisu und Usagi zurück, ebenso wie Regisseur Shinsuke Sato, der bereits die ersten beiden Staffeln so mitreißend geprägt hat.

Fortsetzung mit neuem Regelwerk?

Ob es sich dabei um eine Fortsetzung mit neuem Regelwerk handelt oder das Borderland diesmal noch tiefer in psychologische Abgründe führt, bleibt indes abzuwarten. Zum Cast von Staffel 3 gehören übrigens auch Hayato Isomura, Ayaka Miyoshi, Katsuya Maiguma, Koji Ohkura, Risa Sudou, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Tina Tamashiro, Kotaro Daigo, Hyunri, Sakura Kiryu, Yugo Mikawa, Joey Iwanaga, Akana Ikeda und Kento Kaku.
